Hello, I am new here
Hello all,
I am new here. @Ken was so nice to let me in, and he asked a question:
I'm curious how you found me as I have not done anything to promote the content on that substack yet outside of limited mentions on FB
Somewhere on the fediverse, or on a website that talks about Friendica was a link to Ken's substack. Tried to reconstruct where and how, but can't.
Been a FB user since 2007, and my core private network -- argentine tango dancers -- are exclusively communicating through FB. About 10 years ago i started to search for alternatives every now and then, and since FB is becoming enshittified, I have intensified the search. Friendica is the most promising solution, coupled with more players in the fediverse. I'm trying to figure out how to get the 5k tango dancers to switch away from FB in the coming years.

Hi,
My name is Surfer Ken and I'm #newhere. I am still fairly new to the #fediverse and to #friendica. I'm learning as fast as I can and I am looking forward to learning more with you.
(Please note that this account is a test account that I use for testing and writing friendica tutorials. If you wish to friend a real human who checks his account more regularly please friend @Ken Gahagan instead.)
My friendica <-> Bluesky config yesterday had something wrong but today it appears to be functional. I think I've learned something for the reference on configuring this integration.
My hope is that this posts to Bluesky this time.

Posting to Bluesky from Friendica
I've enabled Bsky integration on my friendica instance and this is my first cross-post from friendica to Bluesky. Once I see this work I'll be very happy.
To my few Bluesky followers - I apologize for the testing spam. I hope that once all the testing is over that you'll consider making my friendica server an alternative to Facebook.
Ken

Hello Everyone
Hi,
My name is Ken Gahagan. I'm #newhere.
I am retired and extremely frustrated at the current state of political affairs in the #USA. I know there are many currently motivated to leave commercial social media and as part of my #resistance I have set up this #friendica site as a place for FB expats to call home. (I'm still configuring the friendica site so it isn't quite ready for new users yet - check back soon)
I am #gay, #married, and I love my two dogs.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. This is all great input. I've never found great value in X / Twitter / Mastodon myself so your comments really resonate with me. Just comparing notes re: VPS and hosting provider. I went with a VPS from netcup. Since I'm just setting the thing up at the moment I have a 4 vCPU / 8 GB / 256 GB SSD which bills at about 8 euros a month on a month-to-month agreement so for now I'm pretty happy.
I think your suggestion of a group for admins to collaborate is a GREAT IDEA!! I've created friendicaadminsupportgroup@friendica.unicorns.social. Please join. I'll also send an invitation to the admin of the other server I've been using. He seems like a great guy with some battle scars and doesn't seem to mind answering questions. This will be a great way for me to put a little extra load on the server without opening up the floodgates.
My server is currently by invitation only but I don't think that will create any concerns with folks joining / participating in a group.
I'm also working on a series of posts in a substack that I hope will facilitate folks moving from Facebook to friendica. Currently I'm accumulating all of these as drafts and hope to publish them as a group so I can cross-link them... There is a reason I'm going to that pain on substack for now... but I may ultimately opt for a different strategy... We'll see how it goes. Once I push the publish button I'll post a link back for your feedback.
let's see... more thoughts as I randomly select some of your comments to respond to... š I'm running from the latest tarball. I wanted to start with something that I assumed should be "the most stable." So far I'm the only user and I've only followed a few folks across the fediverse as well as enabled the integration with Bluesky. The server so far has barely registered a blip in terms of load. Some of the nightly cron jobs to update clamAV and whatnot show a few bumps in utilization but nothing near a concerning load.
Thanks for the engagement. I look forward to working with you as we both learn more.

in reply to Daniel de Kay • •Welcome, @Daniel de Kay !
I appreciate your reply to my question and I am glad that you are giving Friendica a chance. My goal is to provide a reasonably stable Friendica instance just for folks like you. I've been looking to perform a "soft launch" of this site and you are one of the first to join this server. Over the next week or so I will migrate to some more robust infrastructure in hopes of achieving better performance.
In the meantime please let me know what observations and suggestions you have. I'm really glad you found the substack. I'm also open to all feedback on how to make that content useful as well as your suggestions regarding topics to be covered. Based on your comments above it looks like I need to cover how to create a group so you and any other tango dancers you entice to join can collect all your dance-related conversations in one or more groups as best meet your needs. Also need to cover events, invitations, and the calendar.

in reply to Daniel de Kay • •Thank you for offering that service. I am actually in a process of doing the same for my tango community: the goal is to have one or more Friendica servers setup for only tango people, so they can use the local user lists to find each other. Maybe add a Pixelfed or some Flickr-analog into the mix, plus the existing wordpress websites of the community, and local event calendars if they offer some form of feed or activity pub streams.
My biggest concern are usability compromises we need to make, and different UX compared to Facebook. Not that FB would be perfect -- it certainy is not. But that's what has worked well until ca. 2020.
